Parda or veil custom for women

Should they cover their body properly?

We see in these days there is much cry about Parda or veil custom in the society. Modern thinking people insist that we should get out of this custom and women should move in public without covering their face; claim that it is their right to show off their best. It is shown in history that in ancient India there was no parda custom and it was introduced only as Muslim invaded and began to rule this country. We see and read in many old literature in Sanskrit and other ancient Indian languages like Tamil, where women are described to be in half necked dresses. In Kerala till recent times I know, women were not wearing blouse or brassiere. Now that they have stopped. In Rajasthan we know ladies wear upper garment with back open so long as they move in their chosen society it is fine but in other places it may be risky. This shows that in some places they do not feel unsafe and so they freely enjoy showing off. Women have a natural need for appreciation of their best and since it is a natural need it is not to be objected but other things make it difficult.

We see in many carvings on temples and in caves woman is shown in minimum clothes. There is not a single carving where we see a woman in veil. We know that the sculptors were depicting women of that time and so we should accept that as the proof that in ancient India woman was not compelled to wear veil. She did not feel unsafe as she does today.

Why this change took place after Muslim rulers came here is the question I wanted to study. I consulted many psychologists and I kept on getting only one answer from them. Most of them agreed that the veil custom has something to do with moral health of the society. Here society refers to men of the society. One psychologist told me that veil is required by a female to give her some type of protection from unholy elements in the society. In ancient India and in many aborigine societies we see that females are not fully dressed. They have no danger while moving in their society. In many houses in our society we see women of the house are not properly covered at home so long as they are with men of that house but as some body outsider comes in the house they intuitively begin to cover them in the house also.

In Islam Prophet Mohammad introduced veil for the first time in his followers but that he did not explain anywhere as to why he introduced veil even though previously women of that Arab society were not wearing veil. History writer keep on imagining reasons for that but not a single explanation appears to be acceptable. It may be that Mohammad had imagined of future troubles to women as Arabia was becoming a cosmopolitan society. This also explains that if society is of only same people then women do not feel unsafe but as society becomes mixed due to migration of people from alien places they feel unsafe and prefer to cover them as a way to avoid any inkling from foreign men. That shows that veil is not imposed on them by any social concept but they do it naturally as they feel unsafe.

Above brief discussion shows that veil is due to unhealthy element that stays in the society. Particularly if that element becomes bold enough that moral element in the society is not in a position to control that bad element. This happen when power of government goes in hands of bad element. In a society bad and good both elements co-exist at all times but only when the balance shift from good element to bad element the trouble begins. This explains why we see more such cases of molestation to women happening in UP and not in states such as Tamilnadu. As bad element over powers good element in government by entering in political parties and bureaucracy trouble to women and weaker element in the society begin to grow. Because this advancing of bad element in government encourages other bad element in the society thinking that it is a license to advance in society and continue to do wrong things everywhere.
Bottom line I should put is that women should continue to cover them so long as society is in control of bad element at politics and bureaucracy. Today we see some girls insist that to keep open in public places is their right and they will continue with that trend. I would advise them that they should be more realistic and prefer to keep properly dressed so long as our society is made of sick people. They can enjoy showing off in a limited closed society but not in open public.

Next question is; when will our society be out of that sickness? I am sorry , I really do not know.
