Acts
6:3
Brothers and sisters,
choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the
Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them.
Acts
6:4
and will give our
attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.”
Acts
6:5
This proposal pleased
the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the
Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and
Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism.
Acts
6:6
They presented these
men to the apostles (Peter), who prayed and laid their hands on them.
Acts
6:7
So the word of God
spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a
large number of priests became obedient to the faith.
Until then
Jesus was only a sect and part of Jew religion. People mentioned it
as a sect within the Judaism.
Acts
28:22
But we want to hear
what your views are, for we know that people everywhere are talking
against this sect.”
It was not a
new religion but as the resistance from Elders of Synagogue, Rabbis,
grew and became unbearable; the leaders of this group, Peter and
others, decided to form a Church (temple) separate from synagogue.
Both words synagogue and temple were already in use with Jew and so
probably to differentiate from that a new epithet, kuriakon (Greek
term for house of God) that later on become Church; was used to
mention there worship house. It began in Jerusalem. Roman Church
joined the group under leadership of Paul. This is the stage where a
brand new religion was born as it had very different fundamentals
from previous religion namely Judaism. Other measure Churches,
Eastern Orthodox and Syrian Catholic emerged almost simultaneously.
Circumcision was sign of being a Jew and so that custom was specially
avoided as being unnecessary. To make it look different from Judaism
they refused idolatry of Jews and of Roman religion. They also refuse
to accept the mythological figure of Lilith due to whom; this custom
of circumcision had developed in Jews. However, the Church continued
the mass prayer method of Jews since it was beneficial to Church
business. This selective differentiating shows the callousness of
Church administration adequately.
